Essayet løper som en dialog med Woolfs refleksjon over fotografier fra den spanske borgerkrigen, der Sontags essayistiske behandling av krigsfotografiets historie er aktualisert av krigen på Balkan på 1990-tallet.<br/><br/>Dette er et moralsk skrift som med stor konsekvens betoner det historiske, konkrete, lokale og individuelle mot det abstrakte og generelle i krigsfotografiets fremstilling av lidelse.
