Hun satte sin signatur på en rekke reformer innenfor amerikansk skole-, helse- og fengselsvesen, og hadde et stort sosialt og politisk engasjement for den fattige del av befolkningen. Med poetisk kraft, respekt og innlevelse forteller Ren Powell om D.L.D.s perioder med depresjon og hypomanisk energi i en selvbiografi som rommer to liv: dikterens og Dorothea Lynde Dix'. Boken inneholder også en gjendiktning på norsk av Eirik Lodén. Ren Powell er født i 1966 i USA. De siste 20 årene har hun bodd i Norge. Hun har studert språk og teater, har doktorgrad i skrivekunst fra Lancaster University og arbeider i dag som forfatter og oversetter. Powell underviser på Lundehaugen videregående skole på dramalinjen, og på Prescott College i Arizona.
