På flukt fra tigeren Shere Khan blir indiske Mowgli etterlatt i jungelen av sine foreldre. En ulv tar ham til seg, og han vokser opp blant dyrene der. Bjørnen Baloo og den sorte panteren Bagheera lærer ham jungelens lov, og snart er han i stand til å uttrykke seg på dyrs vis. Men så vender Shere Khan tilbake. Med tigeren i hælene legger Mowgli og Bagheera ut på veien mot menneskelandsbyen.
